I am really starting to worry that the purpose of entertainment is being lost in the greed of phone-ins.
I must confess to have been worried about the slide our media faced as people became confused by what a celebrity was. But if you leave the public to vote on anything then the outcome can be unpredictable and “wrong”. How else could you explain George W Bush’s 8 years as President!
And surely TV executives should have been forewarned when Michele MacManus won Pop Star! But apparently not, judging by the reaction from all sides to John Seargeantgate.
Now I will confess to having not seen more than two steps of his tango or twist or waltz, but if it’s the best dancer they want let the professional judge the show only. If it is entertainment don’t criticise the public for their choice.
Of course what I suspect, it is more to do with filling our airwaves with cheap to make TV and earning extra revenue with the phone votes. So if it is, stop whining and go with the votes. If it is a serious competition then treat it seriously.
Why do the programmes not publish exactly how many votes are cast and how many each contestant received? What can they want to hide?
I think it is overdue to have a top to toe review of what the public want, what is being given and how you marry the two.
Logie Baird, TV’s inventor must be spinning in his grave – all that effort for where we are now!
