I can't wait to read the reality in 30 years time...

One of the fun things about the change from one year to the next is the release of classified data under the 30 year rule.

This year has thrown out the debacle of the state of UK defences in 1978 and the sheer shambles of lack of munitions and military ability. I shan’t go into detail but worth a search on the internet if only to see comment from Jim Callaghan, the then Prime Minister of "heaven help us if there is a war!" and "I take it someone has worked out whether we can defend ourselves!" Not the most reassuring sentiment you want to know about. Doesn’t exactly build confidence!

But it gets you thinking as we launch in to the brave new year of 2009 – just how good are our experts? What makes them experts? And what training have any of our leaders actually had to lead?

At the end of the day we are all human beings and everyone has an opinion but how can you trust experts when time and time again they get it wrong. Do we expect too much. For example the same economists who could not foresee the economic problems that were being created are now confidently predicting when it will be all over.

It feels to me we have the blind man navigating our path, the deaf man listening for danger and the dumb to alert us! Can't wait to read the reality in 30 years time! Enjoy 2009.
