Living life through the media

I have just spent my annual weekend adventure with two mates from New Jersey, USA. I had a night in a less than desirable roadside motel in Miami waiting for my onward flight to hook up with them in Dominican Republic.

You don’t need to know this but in our information reality age, all sorts give details about everything they are up to. Some do it through blogging, some through facebook, and now the latest is Twitter – Stephen Fry is probably the most well known proponent. I am currently debating whether to twitter or not!

But some and it is a growing number are living their lives out through the media. If something hasn’t been reported they probably sit in a chair and wonder what to do next.

This is Reality Media at its most voyeuristic and it’s most seedy. Quite bizarrely the Americans have now coined the phrase for shows that they are not reality, they are actuality shows! Go figure!

Anyway, the most pathetic and tragic has to be the ever unfolding story; sorry I mean life, of Jade Goody. From the first humiliation of her ignorance and exhibitionism in Big Brother, every intricate and private moment has been played out before our eyes.

The relationships, the children, the alleged racism, the failed businesses, the cancer diagnosis and now her marriage and presumably ultimately her death now the cancer is terminal. I pass no comment on whether right or wrong but I do applaud her making money to secure her child’s future.

But where are we headed? How long before Jim Carry in The Truman Show becomes a reality, or should that be an actuality!
