Does the recession bring out aggressive behaviour or is increasing aggression a trend in our society?
Last week I saw that Ray Winston had made a video to try to stop amateur football referees from being abused by spectators and players. The fact that this even needs to be made I find extraordinary.
But then I have noticed that there seems a general growth in abusive behaviour. Recently I was sitting in a huge queue of traffic leading to Blackwall Tunnel; someone tried to cut me up and I received the most extraordinary verbal assault from the female driver with a small child in the car. I just looked at her in shock!
And then I witnessed some outrageous anger aimed at flight check in desk staff even though the customers were patently in the wrong!
Now is this what we can expect more and more of? I certainly hope not.
But clearly there is something sadly lacking in parental guidance or the wonderful society lessons taught at school.
Will we see a slow decent in to social decay? And will that present itself in civil unrest and violence?
What seems’ to be adding fuel to this is the repetitive images of the civil action from past decades. The march for jobs, the miners strike, the winter of discontent, it just goes on.
I really think it is time that somehow we all embrace the need for being nice to each other and restoring civil pride. And cease the steady slide to continue.
Go on smile at a stranger today and if someone annoys you, don’t get aggressive back – show compassion!
