We had the boffins in Newcastle claiming they have made the first laboratory human sperm. Although I suspect the sperm probably just dropped off the lab coats on to the Petrie dishes after a stroll through the “Pig Market”! (If you’ve never been to Newcastle on a Friday or Saturday night you have missed one of the seven unbelievable spectacles of the World!)
I am usually a fairly relaxed pragmatic sort of chap but for goodness sake boffins in Newcastle and the rest of the World – please stop tinkering with nature! If this leads to the first lesbian baby without human sperm donation then heaven help us.
Years ago there was a Sean Connery sci-fi film made in 1974 called Zardoz where the penis was evil and women known as “Eternals” existed and procreated through effectively mass production.
As an impressionable youth watching that film I must admit to thinking Phwooarrrrrrrr at Charlotte Rampling and providing many a happy thought. But now I must say this rapid decline into what would appear to be Sodom and Gomorrah appals me!
Am I just succumbing to Grumpy Old Man syndrome? Every probability but the debate that has raged over this “breakthrough” is typical of the dilemma it produces.
They will surely get there with the manufacture of sperm and therefore who will be the arbiter of how it’s applied, to whom and under what circumstances?
We can’t even trust our leaders and guiders to administer themselves – I expect the soothsayer from Up Pompeii to appear at any time!
