Remembrance Day

When I was growing up Remembrance Day was a time for a Scout parade to church, listening to a list of long ago lost hero’s names being read aloud and the tales of action from fathers and grandfathers.

Now we are embroiled in a Remembrance Day that is of a whole new significance with the sheer scale of loss our troops are suffering in ill-conceived inadequately equipped wars that at best are unwinnable and at worst will see us embroiled for years and more tragic losses.

Never has the words of Pink Floyd been more apt! “And the Generals sat and the lines on the map, moved from side to side! Replace politicians for generals obviously!

Hindsight always gives perfect vision and frequently one can look back and think how on earth did we get to where we are? Well when Tony Blair followed poodle-like, George W Bush in to Iraq at what point did that highlight a mandate to move from Country to Country as self appointed cleansing teams to try to make the World safer.

So I would ask each and everyone to take a minute silence and thank our brave troops, remember all those throughout history who had their lives cut short and all those who continue to be prepared to be at risk. Then take another minute and ask to whatever God you follow that our politicians see sense in finding a way to extricate our troops from the wars without much more human collateral cost. Or that the troops are properly funded and equipped!
