Prostitution a Moral Maze

It is said that the two oldest professions are lawyers and prostitution. I guess both started around the same time on similar principles – you pay a fee to get …………..!

Anyway I digress, already. Prostitution sprang to mind last week and indeed the sex industry generally for a couple of reasons. No not Jordan’s claim she won’t get her kit off in the jungle because the public keep giving her challenges – more of a novelty if she stayed fully clothed mind you! Rather it was the revelation of the name behind the persona of Belle de Jour.

There have been call’s since the voluntary unmasking of research scientist’s Dr Brooke Magnanti that she is glamorising prostitution and that for many people in the industry that is not a fair portrayal.

Any industry will have the good, the bad and the ugly – but most are afforded some protection through the law.

Now one thing that should be obvious to all is that sex sells. Whatever, wherever, whenever – sex sells. Whether that is right or not is a whole other matter. But unless we all wear blindfolds you cannot change human nature.

So it leaves us in the moral maze of whether it would be right to legalise or trying to pretend it is wrong and that wasting resource on prosecutions and punishment is the way forward. Personally given the black hole in our economy I would opt for legalisation and then gain benefit from the tax. Mind you it would probably need its own category based on a turnover tax!
