Stop......... Carry on.....

Well the Copenhagen summit seems to be going on for weeks and from the amount of people flying in and out it makes you wonder if the carbon emission problems couldn’t have been solved by cancelling the summit!

Of course this is a matter of vital importance. But I somehow can’t help wondering whether we need to take stock of where we are and apply some common sense to the Worlds woes. I recently made a comment to a friend “then I think every now and then we have to just stop and stand still and let it all slow down” in answer to feeling like I’m chasing my tail.

Well that feels fairly apt as we draw the curtains on 2009. We have seen targets set for zero carbon homes by 2016! How? Why? We are not tackling a problem, we are merely creating more.

A lot of elements in this big complex conundrum intertwine and create unforeseen impact. The interplay between the installation of biomass district heating systems and the requirement for homeowners to have competitive energy sources means already developments have been completed and the biomass systems never switched on!

We have sealed housing with virtually no air exchanges to maximise heat retention and minimise heating requirements – well that won’t lead to sick building syndrome will it!

So let us hope the World’s leaders start playing the long game - although short term self interest serving will always take some beating!
