The more society progresses it seems the less understanding and appreciation there is. There is a desire to embrace the World and to shake up the snow globe of life as long as everyone conforms to “our image and expectation” – whatever that may be.
You would think that after the experiences and humiliation and war caused by British imperialism that people would understand a need for others cultures. You would think after the abhorrent Nazi stance of the 30’s and 40’s that no one would tolerate discrimination or segregation.
However, the focus that has been on the banning of the burka and niqab is extraordinary. With the French Government closest to bringing in a ban but the Italians also reviewing; and for what it is worth UKIP making a plea for a ban.
The claim that the burka can create a divided society is utterly fanciful. What creates a divided society is intolerance and marginalisation. Everyone is different and if we celebrate the differences and embrace each others social and moral rainbow then there has to be a greater chance of all getting along.
We have to teach respect and tolerance and all being accepting of each other.
So the physical manifestation of clothes is pretty meaningless; it is the ideas and the propaganda that is really dangerous. And none more so than our politicians who peddle on the anxieties and fears and look to be driving stakes in to the heart of any understanding.
