Car dealerships and management philosophies

There was a car dealership in the 80’s called Curry Motors.  They had a slogan which got adapted to ’nice business to do people with’!  I’m sure you can work out what two words changed!

Well, this phrase is incredibly apt for the property industry.  Time and again I see extortion and attempts to get away with bluffing or cheating.  Of course this is not just the preserve of freeholders you can find but the unscrupulous leaseholders trying to avoid their responsibilities.

Of course the skill of the professional property manager is to identify the genuine from the fake; the can’t pay from the won’t pay!

All the while getting on and managing the building and delivering service.  Sometimes it can all be very smooth but very occasionally an unreasonable request turns in to an impossible demand.

But at the end of the day this is our profession and role.  Any job serving the public will be thankless.  As anyone who has done it will be well aware expectations can only be managed.  I have no idea what you’re expectations are so how can I exceed them!

What I do know is though the satisfaction in solving a problem is enormous but never to get complacent on.  So as you go home to your home reflect on your day’s work and how many chiefs you have.

In any building everyone may want something different; but while we have an unregulated industry, where anyone can come in and get away with what they can get away with, it relies on awareness and perseverance to get fairness and transparency!
